HIIIT instruments on display in Kunstmuseum Den Haag
A feast for the eyes and ears! From spring 2026, the Kunstmuseum Den Haag will come alive with sound — and HIIIT is joining in. To mark the 200th anniversary of the Royal Conservatoire, the exhibition Base Line – Music Meets Art brings together the worlds of image and sound. For the first time in many years, the museum will once again display part of its remarkable collection of musical instruments — alongside ours. Extraordinary objects such as oil barrels, mini marimbas, and gongs will regain their original voice.
Japanese prints depict people making music, forgotten female composers are brought back into the spotlight, visitors can smell and feel tones, and visual artists reveal how their work is influenced by music. Through an extensive public programme, musicians and communities from The Hague contribute to an experience that transcends boundaries and time periods.
After decades, a part of the museum’s exceptional collection of musical instruments will once again be on display at the Kunstmuseum Den Haag — forming the baseline of this exhibition. Visitors can admire a selection from thousands of instruments from around the world and across different eras. Connections between the instruments and their representation in modern art are highlighted. The exhibition also features work by contemporary artists Derrick Ofosu Boateng, Peter de Cupere, Tara Fallaux, Germaine Kruip, and Dina Lebbar, who express their own connection to music and the multisensory.
The exhibition runs until 14 February 2027.
